How many sheets of drywall do I need?

How to tell if you are being overcharged

Drywall is sold in a handful of sizes, and picking the right one is worth more than shaving the sheet count.

  • The USG submittal sheet for Sheetrock Brand UltraLight panels gives a 4 foot width and lengths from 8 to 16 feet. Longer panels do not change how many square feet you need, they change how many butt joints you have to tape and sand later.
  • The same sheet gives a nominal weight of 1.25 pounds per square foot. A 4 by 12 panel is 48 square feet, so about 60 pounds. That one multiplication decides whether this is a job for one person or two.
  • Panels come two to a bundle on that same sheet, which matters for how they arrive and how they get carried, not for how many you need.
  • This page counts the walls and the ceiling and subtracts the openings you enter. It deliberately does not count screws, tape or joint compound, because we have no single published figure that covers them honestly.
  • No manufacturer publishes a drywall waste percentage either. The 10 here is marked as yours.

The arithmetic, and why the sheet size is a separate decision

The area is the easy half. Four walls are 2 times length plus width, times ceiling height. The ceiling is length times width. Add them, subtract the openings you measured, add your allowance, divide by the area of one panel, round up.

The room this page opens with, twelve by ten with an eight foot ceiling, gives 352 square feet of wall plus 120 of ceiling, which is 472, less 40 square feet of door and window, so 432. Add ten percent and you are buying 475 square feet. In four by eight panels, 32 square feet each, that is 15 sheets. In four by twelve panels, 48 square feet each, it is 10 sheets.

Same room, same square footage, same money on the material within a few dollars. What changed is the number of joints, and joints are where drywall actually costs you.

Why the long edge and the short end are not the same joint

USG's submittal sheet says it in one line: the ends of the panels are cut square and even, while the long edges are tapered. A tapered edge gives you a shallow valley that tape and compound sit down into, finishing flush. A square cut end has no valley, so the tape and three coats of compound have to be feathered out wide across a flat surface to disappear. That is the butt joint, and it is the joint that shows under a window at four in the afternoon.

Panel length does not change your square footage. It changes how many of those square cut ends you have to hide. On a twelve foot wall, one four by twelve sheet gives you none. Two four by eight sheets give you one, in the middle, at eye level. That is the entire argument, and it is worth more than shaving a sheet off the count.

The point where a drywall number stops adding up

Multiply the sheets quoted by the area of the panel size quoted, and divide by your wall plus ceiling area. That is the allowance actually used. No manufacturer publishes a drywall waste percentage, so there is no figure to hold anybody to, but there is a mechanism you can reason from: drywall waste comes almost entirely from openings and corners, not from floor area. The piece cut out for a door usually cannot be used anywhere else. So a room with four doors and three windows wastes far more than a plain box of the same size, and a quote that ignores your opening count for a heavily interrupted room is not being generous, it is guessing.

The other flag is a quote in sheets that never asked your ceiling height. Eight foot, nine foot and ten foot ceilings are three different jobs on this material, and the next section is the reason.

The 54 inch panel almost nobody offers you

USG lists two widths on the submittal sheet, four feet and 54 inches, and lengths from 8 to 16 feet. The 54 inch width exists for one reason and it is a good one. Fifty four inches is four and a half feet. Two courses of it stacked horizontally is exactly nine feet, which is the ceiling height that a four foot panel handles badly, because four plus four is eight and the last foot has to be ripped and taped as a third strip along the top of every wall.

On a nine foot ceiling, four foot panels give you two horizontal joints per wall plus a ripped filler. Fifty four inch panels give you one joint, in the middle, and no rip. If your ceiling is nine feet and nobody mentioned this, they were quoting the size they had on the truck.

The catch is honest and worth saying: the sheet notes that other sizes are available by special order and that availability should be checked locally. So this is a question to ask before you order, not an assumption to build a plan on.

Weight, and whether this is a one person job

Nominal weight on the same sheet is 1.25 pounds per square foot, described as approximate and intended for design and shipping. Multiply it out and the whole handling question answers itself:

Panels come two to a bundle on that same sheet, so a bundle of four by twelves is roughly 120 pounds arriving at your curb. And every one of these goes on the ceiling before it goes on the walls. The sheet count is the easy half of this job. The weight is the half that decides whether you are doing it alone on a Saturday.

This is where the receipt gets away from people, so here is a public estimating table you can hold up at a counter. Lowe's publishes a Drywall Materials Estimator that lists, per area, the panels plus the joint compound, tape, nails and screws:

Read it as a rate and it is easy to carry around: roughly a gallon of compound, thirty five feet of tape and a hundred and twenty five screws for every hundred square feet of board. On the 432 square foot room above that is about four and a third gallons of mud, 150 feet of tape and 540 screws, none of which is counted by the panel calculator on this page.

Two more lines that only appear if somebody tells you. USG specifies 1-1/4 inch Type W bugle head screws at a maximum of 12 inches on ceilings and 16 inches on walls over wood framing, so the screw count is not a preference. And on finishing, the sheet says all surfaces including applied joint compound must be dry, dust free and not glossy, primed with First Coat primer or an undiluted high solids interior latex flat, and that where walls will get gloss, eggshell or semigloss paint or sit under critical lighting the board should be skim coated with joint compound first. A skim coat is a whole extra pass of material and labor, and it is the difference between a Level 4 and a Level 5 finish under Gypsum Association GA-214.

What gets asked at the lumber counter

Should I buy 4 by 8 or 4 by 12?

Fewer, longer panels mean fewer square cut butt joints to hide, which is the finishing half of the job. Shorter panels are easier to carry and easier to fit through a stairwell. The material cost per square foot is nearly identical, so compare price divided by panel area, not price per sheet, and then decide on handling.

How far apart can the framing be?

Maximum framing spacing on this product is 24 inches on center, parallel or perpendicular, on walls and on ceilings. On ceilings taking water based texture there is a further condition about the weight of unsupported insulation, which is on the submittal sheet.

Do I need to subtract the doors and windows?

Measure them and enter the total. Then remember that you rarely recover the cut out piece, so the subtraction saves you money on paper more cleanly than it does at the store.

Why is my ceiling sagging between the joists?

Sag resistance is a specified property of this particular panel, tested to ICC-ES AC417 and covered under ESR-3365 for ceiling installations. It is one of the reasons this line exists at half inch thickness where older jobs used a dedicated ceiling board.

Is drywall dust actually dangerous?

The sheet's caution is specific: dust may irritate eyes, skin, nose, throat and upper respiratory tract, cut and trim with a utility knife or hand saw to keep dust down, and power tools must have dust collection. That is the manufacturer's own language, not an internet warning.
